School History
Zhongshan Overseas Chinese Middle School is one of the first top-grade schools of Guangdong Province and the first national demonstrative ordinary high schools. The school was founded by the returned overseas Chinese Mr. Chen Maoyuan in 1954 and re-founded by the industrialist Mr. Cai Jiyou from Hong Kong in 1979. In 2007, Mr. Cai Guanshen, CEO of the Sunwah Group, took over as president of the school board, by which time the school, with its southern and northern sections covering over 20 hectares and holding around 7000 staff members and students, had become the largest comprehensive junior-senior high school in Zhongshan.
The school is typical of an overseas Chinese middle school, and has profound cultural deposits. It aims at quality education, orients toward a harmonious development. It has 'human and nature' as its theme, self-discipline of students as its principle, and overseas Chinese culture as its essence. All these self-definitions crystallize as the school culture, which has nurtured the study style of 'cheerfulness in studies, alertness in thoughts, clear-sightedness in discrimination, and faithfulness in disposition', the teaching style of being 'meticulous, factualistic, solidaric, and enterprising' and the school style of 'diligence, law-abiding, cooperation and innovation'. In recent years, a lot of outstanding teachers have come to the fore, including two National Model Teachers, two Expert Teachers of Guangdong Province and one Renowned Teacher of Guangdong Province. As the saying goes, 'Join Zhongshan Overseas Chinese Middle School, and Success will Join You.' All students will make great progress since their entry into the school: In the National Hua Luo-geng Cup Mathematics Competition, Liang Yaojian ranked among the top 10 and won the gold medal; In China High School Biology Olympiad, Du Junyu won the first prize; As for the enrollment of the College Entrance Examination, Tsinghua University and Peking University enroll students from the school every year. Students from the school also set great examples for students of Zhongshan: in the College Entrance Examination, Li Jian scored the first of Zhongshan in 2002 and in the High School Entrance Examination, students from the school retained the first place in two consecutive years. The school has established the awareness that problems are the subjects of scientific research, which leads to outstanding achievements in this field: it has won twice the awards for Guangdong Basic Education Achievements and for Outstanding Achievements of the Overseas Chinese schools in Guangdong Province.
